Description
Joe Greene had been Joe Greene for so long that he really thought that he was Joe Greene- - Most of the time anyway.
Heâd lain beside a buddy in a Nam rice paddy one night, made long by the sounds that werenât made by his team or by the gut-shot water buffalo walking in ever smaller circles somewhere off to his left.
âThere ainât never going to be another Joe Greene.â His buddy said.
âHow come?â The one called Padre asked.
âIâm the last one of my family.â
âSo go home and screw something.â
âI ainât goinâ home; Iâm dyinâ. Goinâ numb. Canât feel my feet any more.â
Padre hadnât told him that was because he didnât have any feet, or legs either.
âPadre. Do me a favor.â
âName it.â
âTake my name, an live long enough to make a couple kids for me.â Heâd quit talking long enough that Padre had thought that he was gone.
Then he went on a bit, âName them both Joe Greene.â
âBoth kids?â
âYeah. If you lose the âeâ on Joe, the name fits a split tail; a swinginâ dick, leave the âeâ on.â
âOkay. Heâd said, because you say âokayâ to a dyinâ buddies last request. Especially if youâre laying in a rice paddy and donât want the bad omen of not agreeing.
So Joe Greene lived on. Besides a name that wasnât his was motto that wasnât his either. It was written on a faded card, encased in plastic, that he carried in his wallet.
